The Artist's Studio

Our Club Flower Show, "The Artist's Studio," is just three weeks away, Friday, May 20th. As we're sure you already know, it is being held in Sugar Loaf, New York at The Seligmann Homestead, 23 Oak White Drive. We are happy to report that of those classes requiring pre-show registration - all are enthusiastically filled! However - don't despair. There are two classes in the Horticulture Division which are open right through the day of the Show with unlimited entries. Please check your schedule to read about them, "A Single Brushstroke" and "In the Beginning."

Our Show will be open to the public from 3 to 5 PM so share this information with friends and family members who might be able to make it during that time.

After having enjoyed the Show during the day, we're hoping that you'll be able to join us later on - 6:30 - for an Evening Reception with wine and tapas. Please RSVP to Susan Christensen. Any questions regarding the Divisions can be addressed as follows: Flower - Serene Swirbul, Horticulture - Susie Hull, and Photography - Simonee Tierney.

Please read on in the coming weeks for more information, and do participate on our blog with questions and comments which can only help and interest us all.

O&D visits the High Line in NYC

Last week O&D paid a visit to the High Line, a landscaped park constructed on an old elevated freight rail line, 30 feet above ground.  Located in the Chelsea area on the lower west side of Manhattan, the High Line is still a work in progress with the next phase set to open sometime this year.
Our day started when we were greeted by our host and hostess Mr. & Mrs. David Redden, quickly followed by a short tour on the grounds of the General Theological Seminary.

The Chapel of the Good Shepherd

The weather was not in our favor, but we made the best of it

A representative from the park was our tour guide, sharing with us the history and construction of the High Line

After our tour we walked through the Chelsea Market

Beautiful shops at the Chelsea Market, all ready for the Easter Bunny!

Our day ended with a wonderful luncheon provided by our gracious hostess Jeannette.

Your blog

Congratulations to Colleen and the ladies of Orange & Dutchess Counties for the successful launch of o and d thymes2! I have sent the link to the Chairman of GCA's Commuications Committee and asked her if she is aware of any other GCA club blogs -- you may be the first! I hope you have fun using this great communications tool.

FYI, I was in Morris, CT today (escaping the fog on the south fork of Long Island) plant shopping at White Flower Farm. What a truly lovely day to be driving in the country -- I stuffed my car with 27 perennials! Sound familiar?! It's turning out to be a beautiful spring... all the best, Cindy Willis

Hello Ladies,

I do not recall which of our members brought in cuttings from a very old family wisteria a few years ago. I brought mine to South Carolina where it has been very happy growing in a pot on my porch. This year I felt it was big enough to go out on its own. We bought it an Obelisk to climb on and planted it this past week. It seems very happy in its new home & has not shown any separation anxiety from its favorite railing on the porch. Looking forward to seeing you all in May.

A Celeb in Our Midst

This month's Antiques magazine's Editorial celebrates Morrison Hecksher, the Lawrence A. Fleishman Chairman of the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As most of you know, Morrie is the husband of our own Finella Hecksher. I think Wendell Garrett' s comments bear repeating:

Withal, Morrie is a public man but a very private person, who deeply loves his wife, Finella - a British-born, Oxford-trained, highly gifted pediatric endocrinologist - and reveres his friends and colleagues more than all his achievemments and accolades.........But perhaps the places he loves most passionately are his nineteenth -century Gothic revival weekend house up the Hudson River near Newburgh (which he has been in the process of restoring for several decades now).......

Morrie was presented with the 2011 Award of Merit by the Antique Dealers Association of America on April 9. Those of us lucky enough to have had his
guided tour of the new American Wing last year know that Morrie is a fascinating gentleman who happens to be married to our intriguing member, Finella! Congratulations!

IT'S A GOOD THING

Found in A Booke of Sweetmeats belonging to Martha (Washington):

TO CANDY VIOLET FLOWERS

Take violets which are new & well cullered. weigh them, & to every ounce  of flowers take 4 ounces of very white refined sugar, & dissolve it in 2 ounces of water. soe boyle it till it turn  to sugar agine, & scum it very often that it may be very clear, then take it of & let it coole. after, put in yr violet flowers, stiring them together til (the) sugar grow hard to  (the ) pan, (then) put them in a box & keep them to dry in a stove.

And you thought Martha (Stewart) was the arbiter of all "good things"!
