Philadelphia Flower Show

The following was submitted by Kathleen Stradar. She attended the Philadelphia Flower Show as a Hort Judge-in-Training and was fortunate to capture a winning arrangement created by Zone III's Laura Hailey and Susan Detjens:

The show was called Springtime In Paris

ART IN BLOOM

This is an invitation to O&D from the Newbugh Historical Society. The last Art in Bloom was held 2 years ago at Kapeles and was quite impressive and well attended. They are hoping that some of us will participate. It is an easy way to gain experience!

Art in Bloom
at
Karpeles Museum
94 Broadway
Newburgh, New York

June 3, 4 and 5, 2011

Art in Bloom is a combined art and floral design exhibit. Local artists will display works of art that will then be interpreted in floral arrangements by local floral designers.

You are invited to participate in Art in Bloom as a Floral Designer. Local artists have been asked to submit a selection from their works that is not a rendering of flowers or a total representation of a floral theme. Your challenge is to create a floral interpretation of a selected work. The mood, the confluence of colors, the juxtaposition of objects, and the sense of symmetry in each work of art should all influence your floral design. You are welcome, and encouraged, to be as creative as you wish. There are no rules for your design; you are only limited by your imagination!

I hope that you will accept this invitation to be a part of Art in Bloom. Attached is the schedule that will prevail for the event.

Please contact me via email, lilynorton845@gmail.com or at (845) 562-8729 with your decision no later than May 10th. If you have any questions, I will be happy to address them.

Sincerely,
Lily Norton

free Stonecrop newsletter & fab seeds on the cheap

As most of you know, I help Stonecrop Gardens with their newsletter. Even though I'm an insider there, I think some of Stonecrop's latest offerings are worth sharing with our club.

Stonecrop Garden's latest newsletter is posted on their website (www.stonecrop.org) as a pdf. It seems like this issue has a bonanza of articles that provide substantive advice to gardeners, from native plants for the shade garden to Director Caroline Burgess's top plants for alpine troughs. Also included is the recipe for Stonecrop's alpine soil mix (heretofore a State secret) and instructions on how to make your own hypertufa trough. Please feel free to forward the newsletter to any one you think might enjoy it.

Also of note is Stonecrop's Index Seminum and Index Rarium. A great deal of time is spent each year collecting seeds from the myriad plants in Stonecrop's collection. For the past few years, they have been available for purchase by the public, with discounted prices offered to Stonecrop members. These are seeds for items you might never find elsewhere AND they are just $2 per packet, $3 for the very rarest of seeds. If you would like to review the extensive offerings, just visit the Stonecrop website (www.stonecrop.org), scroll down the menu on the lefthand side of the screen, and click on "Seminum/Rarium." Even if you don't order, the plant descriptions on the seed list are extraordinary, including well-chosen quotes from the likes of Graham Stuart Thomas and E. A. Bowles. Do not open the list unless you are prepared to be armchair gardening for a while.

Enjoy!

Bits and Pieces

Hello O&D!

So happy to see a number of you have signed on to our Blog....do wish you would spread the word to the feint of heart how easy it really is.
.
Thought you'd like to know that Dorothy Shreve has celebrated her 93rd! birthday. What a lady!

Our indominatable VP, Susan C, is a bit hampered these days...seems she fractured her fibula. Somehow I don't think that's going to stop her.

I'm sure, by now, you've all read The Artist's Studio schedule...now we all need to make the show a success. Don't forget to send in your entry forms asap! And remember, you can always enter as a team if you don't want to go it alone.

Just a suggestion...if you have a comment on a blog which has been posted, click on "comment" rather than "New Post"....Post is for when you write something new ( and please do!). Also note that you are encouraged to post photos so let's share our ideas.

Cheers! Colleen

Colleen,
This looks wonderful! Thank you so much for setting it up- perfect timing with the busy spring we have ahead of us....I'm looking forward to checking it.

Thank you Colleen

Thank you for setting up this blog, Colleen! O and DThymes2 looks great. This is my first blog and it was easy to set up an account and get started. I hope everyone will start sharing gardening ideas, flower arranging tips, conservation news and other items our members might be interested in. Thanks again for all your hard work in getting this up and running.

PRESENTING..............

Welcome all to O and D Thymes 2! A work in progress, but hopefully, a big step toward closer communication among this widely separated but incredibly connected group of gardeners. As we approach our 100th anniversary, GCA is working hard at more efficient dissemination of the goals and activities of GCA clubs in keeping with the world's technological advances. I hope you will all become regular and active participants in this Blog. Feel free to publish your thoughts, whether it be a few sentences or a short story! Bloomers are always welcome as are social tidbits. And if you have a coment on another's entry, enter it. In short, make this Blog a running dialogue; use it as your calendar, your pulpit, your resource. The more you use it, the easier it will be and the better informed we will all become.

As I said in the beginning - this is a work in progress. Don't hesitate to send me your suggestions. This is a total club project! Thank you.

Happy blogging,
Colleen
I would like to be the first to congratulate Colleen on successfully setting up an O&D BLOG! Now, the challenge is for all of us to embrace this idea and have some fun with it. I will be posting updates about our Club Flower Show in May. Stay tuned, and, in the mean time, please start thinking about which class(es) you intend to enter ...
